and coral reefs

A spectacular shark tank !

A 66.000 litre seawater aquarium where these fascinating predators live. They definitely don’t deserve the bad reputation they’ve been given, quite the contrary! You will learn that these animals are not bloodthirsty monsters, but animals with an interesting behaviour, often useful to humanity and frequently endangered.

A few numbers about the shark tank...

Built in 2001, the shark tank has a 66m3 capacity. It measures 4,2m by 4,6m by 3,3m. Its slightly concave “glass window” is made up of a polymeric resin (methacrylate) and is 13cm thick and weighs 1.300kg!

A reconstituted coral reef

The coral reef tank – 11.000 litres of seawater – recreates a coral reef biotope and presents living hosts from the Great Barrier Reef (Australia) as well as other organisms who have colonised this environment.

Some coral skeletons are shown in the halls of the Museum as well as in the Madrepores room : a unique collection of specimens collected by scientists from the University of Liège during an expedition to the Great Barrier Reef in Australia in 1966-1967.
