Belgian Fauna Room

This room is completely dedicated to presenting Belgian Fauna. Not all species are presented and certain animal groups are favoured over others. The visitor will therefore be astonished by the number of birds that live, stop by or just occasionally flyover our small country.

A system of codes constituted by coloured symbols on the tags informs the visitor on the status of the species presented: nesting, migratory, sedentary, wintering, observed once in a blue moon (less than every five years). This last category allows us to present here larger species such as the albatross, vulture or royal eagle.

Most mammals are also present: bats, fox, badger, otter, wildcat, hare, wild boar, deer, squirrel, field mice, hedgehogs…

As for the Invertebrates, due to their small size they are presented in boxes in lower cases.

"Galère-Servais" collection

A diorama allows to make the acquaintance of Ungulate mammals such as the deer or the mouflon. You will find several stuffed species bequeathed to the Museum by Mr and Mrs Galère-Servais.

Particular emphasis is placed on the frontal appendages that characterise many species of Cervids and Bovids: the antlers and horns. You will learn how to distinguish between these two structures, to name the different elements of a deer’s antlers, to understand their evolution throughout a year and their growth throughout the animal’s lifetime, to evaluate the age of a mouflon thanks to its horns…

You will understand how fragile a species the mouflon is, symbol of how much of Nature is living on borrowed time.
