Skeleton of an anaconda Vertebrates – characterised by the presence of an internal cartilaginous or bony skeleton – are classified as fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals. An entire separate room is dedicated to Mammals.
The 101 display cabinets in the non-mammalian Vertebrates’ room barely suffice to represent the diversity of orders and families of fish, amphibians, reptiles and birds. The visitor should follow the numbering on the cases (upper right-hand corner inside each case) if he or she wants to follow the systematic order.
It is of note that two display cases are dedicated to Prochordates, an intermediary group between invertebrates and vertebrates: the Urochordates or Tunicates, and the Cephalochordates (Amphioxus).
